Braggable Turkey Burgers

I just dare you to try them…

Meat is amongst one of the most highly concentrated sources of protein, and although I love a good chuck beef patty there is something so dang good about this turkey burger recipe. I’ll be honest I have tried many not so great recipes that typically lead me to choose beef every single time (which is totally ok by the way!). Good quality beef is your friend if you eat meat. But there is something unique about this recipe that takes the cake my friends and so here I am, sharing it with you now.

There is something special about this recipe simply because it uses turkey meat. Protein- made up of amino acids, are the building blocks of protein. And we need protein for a variety of reasons- to build and repair muscles and bones, for cellular production and energy, to make hormones and enzymes, support immune function and last but not least soothe and regulate our nervous systems. There is something extra special about turkey meat in that it contains amino acid tryptophan- which is required to make neurotransmitter, serotonin.

Serotonin- our feel good, calming and relaxing mood chemical that if I am being honest, most of us are living in short supply of.

So these burgers are not only the juiciest and most flavourful turkey burgers you will ever eat, but each burger contains about 20 grams of protein (4oz of meat/about the size of your palm) to help keep your nervous system humming. They are also kid friendly (because they don’t notice the diced spinach), and so something the whole family can enjoy!

They are easy to make and can also be pre-made if prepping for the week or want to store them raw and freeze. Feel free to get creative with toppings- typically in our house it’s mayo, mustard, ketchup, sliced tomato, lettuce or sprouts, and sliced avocado. Top on a regular or gluten-free bun. This recipe makes 8 patties so often we have leftovers or you can cut the recipe in half to make less. If you’re looking for an easy lunch through the week, I frequently enjoy a cold burger chopped up over a salad, or leftover burger chopped up with pasta noodles and sauce works well for the kids!

This burger recipe is perfect for the summer BBQ season and long-weekend gatherings. They would also pair nicely with this- BEST Kale Caesar Salad recipe if wanting a second dish, or they can totally be enjoyed all on their own.

What you need:

2 packages group turkey (450 g each)

2 tbsp mayonaise (I use an avocado oil based mayo by Chosen Foods)

2 tbsp dijon mustard

2 tbsp coconut aminos (or a little less if using soy sauce)

2 tsp paprika

2 tsp garlic powder

Sea salt and pepper to taste

2 tbsp avocado oil (for frying)

Optional but recommended:

1/2 cup finely diced fresh spinach

1/2 cup feta cheese

What to do:

1. Finely dice spinach if adding spinach and set aside.

2. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Stir to combine and ensure seasonings mixed in well.

2. Form mixture into eight palm sized patties.

3. Add oil to a medium to large sized pan on stove top over medium heat.

4. Add four patties at a time to the pan and cook for 4-5 mins on each side.

5. Finish on the grill for another 5-6 mins until cooked through.

6. Serve on buns with your choice of toppings.
